Our Dedication to Preparedness

Emergency Management has been mandated by the Kupkúkwpi7 as a priority area for Nation-based focus. Together, the 17 Kupkúkwpi7 guide the vision for Nation-based emergency management and advocate for adequate recognition and resources to exercise a Secwépemc approach to emergency management in all areas of preparedness, planning, response and recovery.

Our Secwépemc leadership has been a strong advocate of increased involvement and an increased role and responsibility within the rapidly evolving emergency management sector. Over the past few years there has been an increase in climate related emergencies within Secwepemc’ulewc. This increase in climate related emergencies has furthermore increased the urgency to dedicate more time and resources within Secwepemc communities towards capacity building and emergency planning.

Through guidance and collaboration with Indigenous Services Canada and Secwépemc leadership, the LtMHS has been the recipient of funding through the Emergency Management Assistance Program. The program was designed to empower First Nations Communities to prepare for and respond to natural hazards through

  • Mitigation,
  • Preparedness,
  • Response, and
  • Recovery.

We’ve developed our own mission and strategic plan surrounding emergency management in response to this opportunity.

Our Mandate & Mission

Le7 te Melámen is called upon to create a harmonized approach through collaboration, advocacy, and support as mandated in the approved workplan.

Towards those aims and in order to empower the Secwépemc Nation to prepare, plan, respond, and recover following the moral guidance of Secwépemc law principles and ethics, we’ve created a strategic plan for emergency preparedness.
